While I LOVE fun Halloween themed foods, I don't always love when they go too far in the kitschy direction and become almost inedible. You want to make sure the recipe is fun and festive, while still being delicious!
That's why I love this recipe! Using ingredients that already pair well together and just happen to look gory and creepy for Halloween?! That's a win win.
Ingredients
Brie: For this recipe, you'll need a wheel of brie cheese. You can find them at most grocery stores!
Pepper jam/jelly: I used this pepper jam. It's one of my favorites and it has a great red color! You can use whatever pepper jelly or jam you like best, just make sure it's blood red!
Flaky salt (optional): A little sprinkle of flaky salt over the pepper jam helps bring out the flavor!
Baguette: I like to serve this brie with warm baguette slices, but you could use crackers if you prefer.
Easy to make!
One of the best parts about this Bloody Baked Brie is how easy it is! There are only a few ingredients and a couple steps.
Prepare the "blood" pepper jam: Combine your jam and hot water to reach the right consistency.
Bake the brie: Bake the brie for 15-20 minutes.
Warm the baguette: In the last few minutes of the brie baking, add the baguette to the oven to warm it, then slice it up.
Make it bloody! Top the baked brie with the pepper jam blood.
Serve. That's it!
How to make the "blood"?
The blood is made from pepper jam and a little hot water- that's it! You can use whatever pepper jelly/jam you like best, just make sure it's really red!
Combine about 3 tablespoons of the pepper jam with 2-3 tablespoons of hot water in a bowl and stir. This helps make the consistency a little more blood like and make it easier to fill the syringe.
You may need to adjust the amount of hot water, depending on the thickness of the jam you use. Start with a small amount, and add more as needed. I heated the water quickly with my trusty kettle (I love this thing)!
Now make it spooky!
It's not a Halloween appetizer without some spooky touches! Here are some ways to make it extra ghastly.
Dark serving tray. If you have a black serving board or tray, now is the time to use it!
Don't skip the syringe! These syringes are cheap and they reinforce the idea of the blood.
Speaking of blood...don't forget the drips! Making a few blood drips down the sides of the brie makes it look more realistic.
Spooky serving knife. For being so small, this (super cheap!) mini cleaver has a big, creepy impact!
Recipe FAQ
Sour cherry, raspberry and red currant are all great options for pairing with brie. Just make sure the color is red enough!
You can always add a drop or two of red food coloring if your jam/jelly is not red enough. No big deal!
You can store leftover baked brie in the refrigerator up to 5 days and re-heat it in the microwave or oven.
Yes! Camembert is similar to brie, but with a slightly funkier flavor. This recipe will work with camembert as well.
I hope you enjoy this super easy appetizer this Halloween season- it's bloody delicious!
